Consorzio del Tarvisiano - Go to Nature

Santuario Monte Lussari Mountain Shrine

The Santuario bonds together the Slavic, Italian and German ethnicities, whose pilgrims have been visiting the site since the sixteenth century; nowadays, it can be called without doubt a European Shrine.
An old legend says that, in 1360, a shepherd from Camporosso lost his sheep on Mount Lussari, but found them a little later, kneeling around a mountain pine bush. To his great amazement, he realized that a Madonna with Child statuette stood at the centre of the bush. The shepherd took the statuette and brought it down to the valley, where he gave it to the Parson of Camporosso, but the same statuette was back on Mount Lussari the very next morning, with the sheep still kneeling around it. This occurrence happened a third time. Following these miraculous events, the patriarch of Aquileia ordered that a chapel be built in that place. Today, there are no longer any traces of that original chapel; the current building is the result of reconstructions and extensions of a sixteenth century building.
The shrine can be reached on foot, over the charmful Pilgrim’s Path (Sentiero del Pellegrino) that unfolds through the woods in the Tarvisio forest, or by cable car leaving from Camporosso.
